About this Simulation

This simulation models how a mass spectrometer uses crossed electric and magnetic fields to select and separate ions based on their mass-to-charge ratios. Students can adjust field strengths, particle properties, and observe real-time particle trajectories to understand velocity selection and mass resolution principles.

Learning objectives: Understand how electric and magnetic forces act on charged particles in a velocity selector | Explore the relationship between field strength and particle deflection | Analyse how mass spectrometers achieve particle separation and identification
