General Description

This JavaScript App simulates the Micrometer. The simulation shows the instrument setup with a rectangular object .

The Micrometer model has an object (Green) for the internal jaws to measure width of an object with simple drag action to control position and size of object.

Visual Elements

Frame: The C-shaped body that holds the anvil and barrel in constant relation to each other. It is thick because it needs to minimize expansion, and contraction, which would distort the measurement. The frame is heavy and consequently has a high thermal mass, to prevent substantial heating up by the holding hand/fingers. has a text 0.01 mm for smallest division of instrument has a text 2 rounds = 100 = 1.00 mm to allow association to actual micrometer
Anvil: The shiny part that the spindle moves toward, and that the sample rests against.
Sleeve / barrel / stock: The stationary round part with the linear scale on it. Sometimes vernier markings. .
Lock nut / lock-ring / thimble lock: The knurled part (or lever) that one can tighten to hold the spindle stationary, such as when momentarily holding a measurement.
Screw: (not seen) The heart of the micrometer It is inside the barrel.
Spindle: The shiny cylindrical part that the thimble causes to move toward the anvil.
Thimble: The part that ones thumb turns. Graduated markings.
Ratchet: Device on end of handle that limits applied pressure by slipping at a calibrated torque..

Micrometer gives measurements up to two decimal places in mm

Controls

ComboBox 1: Show and hide hints, answers, lock/unlock micrometer etc
ComboBox 2: Sets the zero error
play button to run the micrometer to move automatically.
reset button to bring simulation back to original (default) setting.
?= click to toggle between combobox or input field.
combobox/inputfield to ease selecting answers like 0.00 and key in numbers.
double click on the screen to go full screen, especially useful on mobile browsers
drag on the screen reposition, especially useful on mobile browsers
pinch in/out to zoom in/out, especially useful on observing the micrometer scale readings
menu to show or hide the control panel
